Before ALTIVU's involvement, Kensington residents had few ways to actively participate in emergency preparedness beyond serving on limited boards or committees.
ALTIVU saw an opportunity to transform that constraint into a catalyst by using the Firewise USA® program as a platform for empowerment. The goal was ambitious: establish a Firewise community for every neighborhood in Kensington—creating a network of local ambassadors who could sustain wildfire preparedness from the ground up.
ALTIVU designed and led a recruitment campaign to identify new leaders, streamline processes, and align Firewise objectives with the District’s broader emergency-preparedness strategy. By reducing redundancies and supporting Firewise leaders with communication tools, clear branding, and strategic guidance, the program became easier to join and more rewarding to sustain.
The results were measurable and rapid: the number of Firewise communities expanded dramatically, and resident participation in preparedness activities, events, and email communications surged.
What began as a single community initiative evolved into a scalable model for civic engagement and local resilience.
ALTIVU's approach turned passive awareness into active leadership—proving that when residents are trusted with purpose, they rise to meet it.
